Review of State Of Decay 2 w/ Video Gamplay
It has been a few years since zombies took over TV and video games, and the trend shows no sign of abating. That’s quite evident as the new State of Decay 2 console game has been released, and it’s a doozy. Just about every State of Decay 2 review praises its challenging gameplay and excellent graphics, though it has some flaws that should eventually get fixed in updates.
The Good
This isn’t just any simple shoot-‘em-up game like the original Doom. It’s actually a game that tests your ability to build, sustain a community, be who you want to be with the threat of zombies all around you. If you want to be a handyman, you can be a handyman.
You get to build relationships with other characters, and then they can become playable as well. These characters have their own personalities and skills, along with their own storylines that add to your overall plot.
You build your settlement, and you need to worry about supplies such as food. You have to look for vehicles, and you need fuel as well. You need to keep your settlement safe, and here there’s no turning back the clock if a character dies. Dead is dead.
The gameplay is quite challenging, and it can pose moral questions that rarely exist in the virtual world. You’ll need to kill zombies that were formerly friends, or even dispatch infected members of your community. But what if you’re running low on food and supplies? Who do you order to go on food runs when people don’t have the requisite skills? Sometimes you will have to do questionable acts for the “greater good”.
The Bad
Zombies again? Some may just find themselves growing tired of shooting at the same old types of targets. You may even find yourself wishing that the apocalyptic world has been overrun by werewolves or vampires.
At least there’s some variety in the zombies you encounter. Some are just plain slow, but others are tougher to kill. They may be frighteningly quick so they’re hard to shoot, and sometimes they can be so huge and so large that you can only kill them by running them over with your vehicle. Some are screamers, and their screams call the attention of other nearby zombies.
The realism here is outstanding. If you hit a huge zombie with your vehicle then you can end up with a trashed vehicle. You should also try to use your axe as often as you could instead of your machine gun—the gunfire will attract hordes of zombies!
The Ugly
It seems like a great game that can enthrall you for hours, doesn’t it? It doesn’t hurt that it looks great, and it requires you to think and ponder rather than just require you to shoot accurately.
What’s and is that there have been reports of instability in the gameplay. These bugs can result in characters or supplies suddenly disappearing, or zombies suddenly spawning in the midst of your characters. It’s a bummer, as you can feel like you’ve written a 20-page school report that has suddenly been permanently deleted.
At least not everyone has been affected by these bugs, and hopefully they’ll be fixed. It’s a fun game even with familiar zombies as the enemy. Every time you play, you’ll encounter new scenarios and moral quandaries that can really shake your conscience to the core.
